The Cannes Film Festival was born from the desire to host a cultural event in France that could compete with the Venice Film Festival. Even if the idea got approved on 1939, it wasn’t until the end of the war that the first festival took place. Now, in May of each year The Festival de Cannes takes over the city and over the news worldwide. Since 1946 professional film makers, actors and all type of celebrities attend the Palais de Festivals et des Congrés to walk down the red carpet.

Thierry Frémaux, the General Delegate since 2007 says that the Festival’s current meaning tries to stay faithful to its original founding purpose: “to draw attention to and raise the profile of films, with the aim of contributing towards the development of cinema, boosting the film industry worldwide and celebrating cinema at an international level”.
